Nestled in the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal, Darjeeling has a charm that feels both nostalgic and timeless. For many travelers from Kolkata, it’s often the first hill station they fall in love with — thanks to the cool mountain air, endless tea gardens, colonial-era buildings, and those unforgettable early morning views of Kanchenjunga when the sky is clear. The famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, better known as the Toy Train, still winds slowly through the hills and local markets, offering a journey that feels less like transport and more like stepping back into another era.

Darjeeling is not really a place to rush through in two days. The best experiences usually come from slowing down — sipping fresh first-flush tea at a hillside café, walking around Chowrasta in the evening mist, or waking up before dawn for the Tiger Hill sunrise, even though the crowd and cold can test your patience a little. If you’re travelling from Kolkata, October to December usually offers the clearest mountain views, while summer remains popular for family vacations and school holidays.
